  • Ne-far-i-ous: heinously or impiously wicked.  Detestable, iniquitous, vicious.  Involved in a conspiracy. Nefarious is not in my active vocabulary and is not even a thought I generally think.  However, when Heather Kintzley used “nefarious” in her comments to my inquiry about the Kennewick School Board decision to appoint a school board candidate to the open school board position, I began wondering, “what could be ‘nefarious’?”

  • During yesterday’s Kennewick School Board meeting we learned that Brian Brooks is not alone in placing campaign literature on cars in school parking lots when district patrons are attending school open house events. As stated in the previous article (Brooks Breaks the Rules) the Public Disclosure Commission provides guidelines for election campaigns on school property based on state law.  The PDC is the watchdog to maintain compliance with state law and contacts school districts to ensure the guidelines are enforced.

  • Dear Mrs. Kintzley, Thank you for your comments on KSD Citizens.  I invite you to write about any education related issues for publication here.  I envision a regular feature from your perspective as a school board member.  I would appreciate understanding more about you and your experiences on the board as you grapple with education issues in Kennewick and I believe many others in our community would benefit as well. While I am not a journalist, I strive to be fair and responsible in representing the issues and persons I write about.  My biases are well documented to the readers of this blog.  My purpose was not to castigate you but to understand the reasons for your decision to appoint a school board candidate to the interim school board position when exemplary non-candidates were available and willing to do that...

  • At Wednesday’s school board meeting I spoke to the board when president Dawn Adams asked for communication from the community.  I stated that some Kennewick residents are disappointed and puzzled by the appointment of a school board candidate to fill the vacated board position.  The complaint is that this appointment appears to be based on politics and not on merit.  My request was to meet with school board members to help me understand their decision so I could report facts, not speculation to people who read this blog.  Adams responded immediately saying she has heard no complaints about their appointment.  She explained that the board had made no requirement limiting applicants to non-school board candidates.  So the board went into executive session and made their decision. This answer did not bring clarity to the selection criteria or speak to the...

  • Monday, August 15, I attended the Kennewick School Board meeting where six applicants for the open board position left by Wendy London were interviewed.  The board is filling the position for the next several months until the November school board election.  Six applicants were interviewed. The 4 sitting board members asked eleven questions of each applicant with each board member assigned several specific questions.  Board members listened to responses and had the option to take notes.  Superintendent Dave Bond was present but did not participate in questioning. My observations: All of the applicants are intelligent, educated, professional, civic-minded Kennewick citizens wanting to give back to our community through service to children and our public schools Three applicants who sought to fill the open position for the remaining term would, if appointed, terminate their service in November Three other applicants are...
