Present were school board members Dawn Adams, Heather Kinzley, Brian Brooks, Ben Messinger, and Ron Mabry.  KSD staff: Dave Bond (Superintendent), Vic Roberts, Chuck Lybeck, Bev Johnson-Torelli, Jack Anderson, Greg Fancher, Linda Tucker, Ron Williamson, Ron Cone, Lorraine Cooper, and Bev Henderson.  Also present was a representative of KEA and several and members of the public.

 

The meeting was Called to Order at 5:35 PM by Dawn Adams who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Communication from Parents, Staff and District Residents:  Teri Staudinger, President of the Kennewick Education Association (KEA), spoke concerning Policy 2420.  KEA surveyed its members and Teri gave the results, in writing, to the board.  Over 300 members responded: 83.1% favored traditional grading, 9.3% favored Standard Based Grading, over 100 respondents were elementary school teachers, 80 middle schools and 93 high schools.  When asked if more time was needed to study grading policy: 65% said “yes”, 14% “the same” and 20% “no opinion”.

 

Larry Roberts, librarian at Highland Middle School rose to address the same issue.  Dawn Adams interrupted him and said there would be time later in the meeting to discuss the grading policy. Continue reading

Present were Brian Brooks, Ben Messinger, Ron Mabry, and Maricarmen Garza (student), all school board members.  KSD staff: Dave Bond (Superintendent), Vic Roberts, Chuck Lybeck, Bev Johnson-Torelli, Jack Anderson, Greg Fancher, Linda Tucker, Ron Williamson, Lorraine Cooper and Bev Henderson,.  Also present, a representative of KEA and several members of the public.  The room was almost full.

The meeting was called to order at 5:30 PM by Brian Brooks who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Recognition Washington Achievement Awards: Three schools in the Kennewick School District have been honored by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for their outstanding performance on assessments for the last three years.  The official awards were given in Mukilteo on April 25, 2012.  Bruce Hawkins, superintendent of Education Service District (ESD) 123, was present to note the awards and give each school a banner celebrating their success.  Continue reading

Kennewick School Board Report for May 25

Kennewick School Board Meeting      May 25, 2011      5:30 PM

All board members were present.

Business:

• The OSPI Washington Achievement Award was presented to the principals of Lincoln (Doug Campbell), Ridge View (Lori Butler), Canyon View (Mark Stephens) and Washington (Rob Phillips) elementary schools. These schools were recognized for overall excellence and closing the achievement gap.

• Superintendent Dave Bond reported on the graduates of Phoenix school from a letter written by the school’s advisors. See details below.

• Bond read a letter from the Paramount Duty Coalition detailing the impacts of the state budget on public education. KSD is a member of the coalition. See the letter at this link:

• Board member Kathy White noted the National School Boards Association (NSBA) is requesting the Department of Education provide regulatory relief from the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which, according to Secretary Arne Duncan, is “broken”. Over 80% of U.S. schools could fail to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2011/12. See details at this link:

• Bond led a board discussion of the proposed KSD Strategic Plan North Star Goals. The purpose was to reconsider each goal using information collected from the community in April. See details below.

Kennewick School Board Report for March 9

Kennewick School Board Meeting   March 9, 2011    5:30 PM   Adjournment at 9:30 PM

Meeting was called to order at 5:40 PM

All board members present.

Business:
• The board commended KSD classified employees who will be recognized during Classified Employees Week March 14 to 18, 2011. KSD employs 800 to 900 classified staff in food services, maintenance and operations and as paraprofessionals, bus drivers and secretaries.

• Superintendent Dave Bond reported that he, Wendy London and Kathy White had attended a legislative conference focused on education funding where they requested that state budget cuts not harm public schools.

• Vic Roberts reported that KSD is implementing a transition to SunGard business system to manage all district financial and payroll accounts. The new system improves over the former one by combining all information into one system.

• Roberts presented a budget update. See details below.

• Discussion about the KSD Strategic Plan continued. Two additional goals were considered and the form and format for soliciting public opinions and comments were approved. Parents and staff who want to comment on the goals may need to contact the district. See details below.

• Ron Williamson presented the second travel request for Kennewick High School Close-Up Civics students to visit Washington, D.C. November 12 to 19, 2011. Board members London and White spoke in favor of the request, Fielding agreed to support it noting he will not consider another exception to the new travel policy and Adams and Kintzley voted no. The request passed on a three/two vote.

• London spoke to the issue of student clubs. I was not present for this business item but refer readers to the Tri-City Herald article by Jacques Von Lunen published March 10, 2011.

KSD School Board Report by Tom Staly

Kennewick School Board Meeting November 17, 2010

Board president Dawn Adams was absent. Board member Lynn Fielding was 13 minutes late.
Board member Heather Kintzley was acting president

Business:

  • Superintendent Dave Bond reported KSD has received a state energy efficiency grant for $88,000.
  • Doug Carl reported the Southgate renovation is going well and the new KSD administration building will be ready for occupancy by December 13 when offices will begin moving there
  • Vic Roberts reported $94.6 million is available for capital projects. $81 million is committed for projects leaving a balance of about $13 million for future projects
  • Bond reported fall 2nd grade DRA test results. Scores ranged from 55% of Edison students meeting the standard to 88% of Cottonwood students meeting standard.
  • Results of two days of community presentations were offered by Bond. All citizen comments have been recorded for board review. In January the board will decide whether to continue community presentations in this format or to revise it.
  • College Readiness, a new KSD publication was presented by Lorraine Cooper
  • The state budget outlook was given by Vic Roberts. See details below. Continue reading
