The retreat was scheduled to begin at 5:30 but did not start until 5:47.  The four board members present – Dawn Adams, Heather Kintzley, Brian Brooks and Ben Messenger – were delayed in a grievance hearing until 5:45.  Dawn Adams Called the Meeting to Order and led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Other people present were Dave Bond, Van Cummins, Ron Williamson, Greg Fancher, Chuck Lybeck, Alyssa St.Hilaire and Bev Johnson-Torelli.

The agenda for the meeting was sparse.  Only five items were listed.  The board members had binders with information about eight topics to be discussed at this first session of the two part retreat.  Dave Bond opened by suggesting they consider item #3 first which was “Grading Practices.”

In January, the board received a presentation on “Standards Based Grading” and since then there have been many comments from constituents to the board and administrators.  The greatest part (about two hours) of the retreat was spent on this topic.  Dave reviewed the information of the January presentation and illustrated the shortcomings of current grading practices by placing a fictitious student in three different classes with different grading practices. Recognition: January has been proclaimed “School Board Recognition Month.”  Dave read Governor Gregoire’s proclamation and presented each school board member with a certificate and thanked them for their service.

Communication from Parents, Staff and District Residents:   Kathy White (me) requested that the board reconsider their decision not to use the Washington State School Directors’ policy audit service.  I met with Kathleen MacDonald, the person who does the audit and updating, during my leadership training.  KSD’s policies have not been completely updated since 1993.  The numbering does not conform to the model policy which makes it difficult to do changes as new laws are enacted.  The board stated it was too expensive but not updating adds to the expense of time required by KSD staff to deal with outdated policy manual.  What’s the old adage?  “Penny smart but dollar foolish!” Continue reading
