Kennewick High School student Drew Wade consented to have his observations from the KSD Community Report published here. This event was held in the KSD Administration Center on Friday, September 30.
The Powerpoint presentation for the event has been provided by Superintendent Dave Bond.
For my Careers in Education class I attended the Kennewick School District Community Presentations on September 30, 2011. At this conference all of the principals and other administrators and members of the Kennewick school board got together and went over test scores and new strategies for learning. In the morning it started with the elementary session then after lunch we began the Middle school/ High school session. After the opening sessions and data overview we went to small group sessions on reading, writing, math, science, and other new programs that the Kennewick School District has begun. Overall it was a very informative and fun day.
At the beginning of the day everybody got a name tag with a star on it and the color of your star determined what group you were in. The 20 minute sessions for the elementary portion of the conference went over reading mastery, math connects, and new science kits. All of these are new ways that the kids are learning in school; they focus on consistent progression and contain easy learning strategies that makes things fun but effective. After lunch the afternoon session began, after the data overview there were two- 20 minute small group sessions. The 1st session went over Make Your Day program, Technology in the Classroom, Student Assessments, Student Support, and Aleks. The 2nd session was on Read 180, English Launguage Learners, College Readiness, International Baccalaureate, and Standards Based Grading. Many of the presentations were by principals explaining their programs but the English Language Learners had some of the students from the program give talks and take questions. For the student assessment we “took the HSPE” and then talked about the difficulty of the problems.
The whole experience was very neat and eye opening. The most interesting thing I learned from this conference was how much poverty affects learning. It showed in the scores consistently for the students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Even though the scores weren’t very good I feel that the new strategies I learned at the conference for teaching will help these students tremendously.
