I first became aware of the work of Mike Rose about 25 years ago. My own interest in teaching higher-level thinking and using constructivist approaches (inquiry, guided discovery and hands-on approaches), mirrored what Rose was doing teaching writing to poor kids in Los Angeles. Last week I was happy to discover his blog and reconnect with this noted American educator, scholar, and writer. I hope you will find his writing as enlightening and informative as I do and that you will have found a new friend who supports a quality, complete, and well-rounded curriculum for every child. Rose’s insights make such common sense and are helpful to seeing the road forward to continue improving education methodically and constructively. Teachers know education and education improvement are processes, not products, and must managed that way.
