The Serious Need for Play

Kennewick School District Citizens support the education of the whole child and believe play to be an important component of such an approach.  Elsewhere on this site we have argued that ways should be found to include unstructured play in each child’s day.  Academic-oriented kindergarten programs have cut into, even eliminated, free play activity from the school program and even recess is restricted for some children.  Scientific American magazine (February, 2009) features an article describing the need for unstructured free play in the intellectual development of children that far exceeds the benefits of the “academics” that have replaced them.  Read the Scientific American article by clicking here.
