Lines of Influence
– August 23, 2010Posted in: Articles

The Seattle Education 2010 blog is written by Sue Peters and Dora Taylor, Seattle Public Schools parents. They are studying the influences on the professional and public discourse about education reform. Of particular interest is the use of Gates Grant funds to push high stakes testing and merit pay.
Anyone with an interest in education will find their revelations about what is going on with Seattle schools to correspond with events in Kennewick schools.
This could be required reading for teachers and parents.
In Kennewick, ties between a board member on the governing board of NWEA (and the dollars going to NWEA for use of the MAP test), raises similar questions. Additionally, dispersal of KSD funds to the private Reading Foundation with the same board member serving as an officer of the foundation suggests that in Kennewick, as in Seattle, we should begin to follow the money.
This was received from Sahila Changebringer, but somehow did’t make itinto the comments:
“I’ve been part of the exercise here in Seattle… as an immigrant from the Antipodes, its long been part of my (cynical) nature to look for lines of influence and patterns of events… follow the money and connect the dots… I was kinda surprised you guys hadnt gotten around to doing that – maybe Americans are more trusting of business and government than we wild colonials are???”
“Anyway.. the next step is to create a flow chart showing how Broad and Gates have infiltrated federal and state departments of education, school districts (supers and management) and influenced school board members… its quite shocking really…”
“If anyone wants to start on that immediately, here’s a good jump off point:
